Item:142629006358This delightfully surreal MASSIVE carved wood fragment from 19th century Asia measures an impressive 15 ¾” wide x 7” tall x 10” deep and has somewhat bizarre finish and subject. We see giant crabs, fish and shellfish and mermen…one appears to be in a chariot…playing underwater among aquatic plant life and rocks. Trompe l’oeil effects are achieved with added wood bits clutched in the giant crab’s claws and the whole has a most intriguing surface with layers of paint history. The first finish appears to be cinnabar red lacquer with gold leaf accents and the later polychrome in stone gray and pink is textured with mica (?) or some similar mineral substance to give the carving a natural stone appearance. As the images show, there are old mortising marks and deeply gouged negative spaces in the ancient wood (akin to cedar?). It has an app. 50 year old wrought brass hanging loop. You will note stable old shrinkage cracks and scattered losses under the later paint. WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS. Please contact for international shipping cost quote.
