Description: Fine Chinese Scholar's Table Screen with Famille Rose Enamel Porcelain Plaque mounted in a carved and pierced sandalwood frame and stand, decorated with flying bats and mythical dragons in a geometric motif. xxxx From Chinese mythology the plaque depicts two of the eight Immortals, portrayed standing in a landscape setting, dressed in formal court attire, one in Aubergine, the other in Turquoise, holding their traditional attributes -xxxx Zhang Guolao - an elderly magician, who lived as a hermit on Zhong Tiao mountain during the Tang dynasty. He was the most eccentric of the immortals, typically shown standing with his emblem, a tube-shaped bamboo 'Fish Drum', with two iron rods extending from the top.xxxx He Xian Gu - the only woman immortal, known as the patron saint for women, a pure maiden, who floated on the clouds, dressed in a long billowing garment, decorated with lotus flowers, carring a lotus, or occassionally as shown here, holding a bamboo Ladle or Fly-whisk, used to dispense wisdom, meditation, and purity. xxxx The inscription written in script on the left, designates a poetic gesture, and the artist signature in a double iron-red script marks.
