Seller: Top-Rated Seller sailerking (9,606) 99.8%, Location: Portland, Oregon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 232874892968 This is a very special 250 + year old antique Japanese Funedansu made entirely of kiri (paulownia). This chest shows a high degree of Japanese craftsmanship in the joinery, being made with hardened hinoki peg and dovetailed construction (see last picture). It has five interior drawers of various sizes custom made to hold valuables and documents (see pictures 7 & 8). When the lower right drawer is removed, it reveals a space behind the lower left side drawer that houses a hidden drawer (see pictures 9 & 10). The style of this document chest as well as the method of construction and all the thick forged iron metal work on this chest dates it to the mid Edo Era (c. 1700). All drawer handles, hinges, and latches are made of forged iron with a protective coat of burnt lacquer. This chest was used to hold accounting books as well as money and valuable documents. On the bottom there are various Japanese Kanji characters which name the maker as well as the original owner (see picture 11). The top handle is still very secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see pictures 5 & 6). All drawers open and close smoothly and the three hinged front door swings open and closed easily. The locks are no longer operable however a slide latch on the front lock holds the door securely closed. The original finish on the kiri wood exterior was a persimmon tannin stain with several coats of kijiro (natural Japanese lacquer). Most of this finish has been lost in the last two and half century which left behind a warm patina as currently seen. It has been well used yet well loved, and along with a two century old warm aged patina, this ships chest remains in very fine condition. This ships chest measures 13'' wide by 16'' deep" by 16" high (33 x 41 x 41 cm). A very warm accent for your home or office as well as great functional space inside five large drawers (with an additional hidden drawer. In Japan, funedansu are considered to be one of most collectible tansu chests. This one is museum grade. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the fine kiri wood and its 2 1/2 century + old patina.
