Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Wouter Schouten' after an anonymous artist. Wouter Schouten (1638-1704) joined the Dutch VOC as a surgeon on an adventureous expedition to the East Indies during the years 1658-1665. In 1660 he was present at the Dutch siege of Makassar (in Sulawesi) and he participated in the campaigns of Rucklof van Goens along the Malabar coast. He also visited Bengal, Arakan, Colombo, Sumatra, the Moluccas, and Ambonia. Etchings by C. Decker and J. Kip.

Subject: Antique print, titled: 'De bandel of reede voor de stadt Arakan.' - The coast off the city of Arakan / Rakhine in present day Burma. On this panoramic print VOC ships, sloops as well as local boats and canoes. Herdmen with buffaloes are crossing the water. On the shore an elephant. In the background pagodas. Key below image.

Condition: Good, given age. Original folds as issued. A few minor spots in the margin and one in the caption below the image. Small tear bottom right edge, not affecting image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
