Here is a very nice Seth Thomas Adamantine mantle clock in good working condition. It keeps good time, and has a very nice deep single-tone chime. (BONG… BONG… BONG…) A bell rings on the half-hour. (Ding!) The face is paper and is showing its age, however replacement are readily available on eBay and from other sources if you wanted to replace it.
The label on the back is mostly complete and identifies the finish as Adamantine. I did a little research and discovered information on Seth Thomas Adamantine, which is an early form of celluloid veneer developed in the late 1800s. The Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the Adamantine veneer in 1881. I'm not certain how old this particular clock is, but the movement is in good working condition. It’s marked “MADE IN U.S.AMERICA” (which seems like unusual wording?) and has the ST inside a diamond inside a circle logo.
The speed adjustment is done by means of a slide that lengthens or shortens the pendulum. (See photos.) There is also a fine-tuning speed adjustment on the clock face below the hands, at 6 o'clock.
The case is in excellent shape, all of the veneer is solidly attached, and the celluloid “marble” pillars are all in good shape. I think the brass hardware is all original. There are lions at either end, and the brass center of the clock face is absolutely stunning, featuring acorns and oak leaves. These should polish up beautifully, if desired. There is a small partial label on the back, top right, from a pharmacy, the name appears to be L.H. OBeer. I’m guessing that’s where it was originally sold, or perhaps the original owner? Measures 16.5” wide by 6" deep, excluding the feet, and is 11” tall. Please examine the photos carefully, and feel free to write if you have questions. Buyer pays actual shipping costs.
