Seller: artslapis (3,079) 100%, Location: Sterling, Colorado, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 143299076528 What a wonderful original antique pastel portrait of a child with an elaborate lace dress holding a black bird with a blue head (perhaps a grackle), at right what appears to be a Northern Flicker woodpecker is perched on the base of a tree. This pastel is so beautifully done, it dates from the end of the 19th or early 20th century. This was purchased from an estate based dealer, she said the sitter was the mother of the person whose estate it came out of. I wouldn't assume a gender otherwise as I know my grandfather's baby photo from 1909 looks about like this only far less chic! The background landscaping is wonderfully done and includes whisps of distant trees, rocks, and grasses. Her dress is very elaborate and she has some gold jewelry, a ring and a necklace. This is so beautifully done and really an unusually artistic and high quality portrait from this era. Framed size 21" x 27" x 2", sight size 13.25" x 19.25". This is pastel on paper, there is a possibility that it was drawn over a photographic print of the subject which was a common thing during that time period. If that's the case, I don't see anywhere where this is clearly evident, but it is a well developed pastel which would obscure that. I opened this up (after the photo of the back was taken) and found it is on a sheet of paper which is likely permanently adhered to a thin paper board. I didn't lift the portrait out of the frame for fear of damaging it. There was no further identifying information on the back, it is possible that the frame may cover a signature but this is unlikely. The paper board backer has some yellowing and discoloration, mostly from the rough hewn wooden boards that act as a cover on this. Please note that the photos of this have reflections of a drop ceiling, if you see a grid pattern running through these it is that and not on the portrait. There are also a few where the vent is reflected, you can see it as some concentric circles reflected in some of the images. Please compare them between each other so you can understand what is reflection and what is not. As for the colors of this, I would say they are somewhere between the two first whole shots, not quite that cold, not quite that warm; it does look different in different lights but overall I would say it has lightly warm undertones. It looks slightly muted in comparison to most of the photos as they were taken in bright sunlight. The portrait appears to be in very good condition for its age, there are a few tiny bits where the surface flaked off exposing a bit of paper behind, the pastel. There is a very light scuff across her arm. The frame has moderate damage but looks good overall. There is some damage and loss to the gesso decorations, but not much, assorted patina and light wear to the guilding, several dark scuffs many of which appear that they will clean off with gentle and careful cleaning. The frame is perfectly appropriate with this moderate level of pleasant patina, but it is also very pretty and worth having light restoration and cleaning done on it if that's your style.
