Composed of lapis lazuli, glass and plated sterling silver, this amazing necklace was designed as Yemeni tribal jewelry which was acquired on a Grand Tour. The Grand Tour refers to the vacation or holiday taken by wealthy Europeans who would travel to foreign lands to discover another culture and country. They would typically bring back a memento or souvenir to commemorate their time spent abroad, like this impressive tribal piece. This choker necklace is a beautiful representation of the Grand Tour jewelry which was being made during this time period. Yemeni nomadic tribes traveled from Turkey down to parts of Northern Africa and the Middle East during the Ottoman Empire. This fascinating ethnic necklace was made for tribal ceremonies or a wedding. The body of the necklace is plated sterling silver which has been hand formed using the ancient metal technique of repousse. The hand-hammered links are connected to larger segments with lapis lazuli and glass beads. The lapis lazuli has a bright blue hue with a speckling of black and white throughout. Each piece of lapis has been hand carved and inlaid flush with the silver setting. The geometric lapis stones are accentuated by red and green glass beads which sparkle. Dangling whimsically from each segment are pendant tassels with coins jangling. This necklace makes a jingle sound as it moves and looks incredible when worn. A wonderful example of Yemeni nomadic tribal jewelry, this ethnic choker necklace would make an excellent addition to any jewelry collection or a lovely gift. Don't miss your chance to own this piece of cultural world history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The necklace is missing some glass accents, but the price has been reduced to reflect this. *This listing is for the item only. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over production of many products, including some jewelry. Historians believe the link between humans and lapis lazuli stretches back more than 6,500 years. The gem was treasured by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. They valued it for its vivid, exquisite color, and prized it as much as they prized other blue gems like sapphire and turquoise. At the end of the middle ages, lapis was ground up and used as the ultramarine pigment found in painting. Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure. Domestic US: All items ship within one business day of receiving payment.
