Item:293348729110From a recent estate auction, an Antique Vintage Hand Painted Japanese Tea Caddy and Lid, with a Raised Gilded Design and Paneled Scenes. Disclosure: I do not know the exact age of this piece. I also am uncertain as to the origin or maker but the marks are pictured in Photo #4. My research of this caddy leads me to think that perhaps it is from the Meiji Era, and from the Kutani area? Perhaps it is Satsuma? I sent this same photo to a friend who teaches Japanese at our local high school. She said that one of the kanji looks like 9 and the other resembles fire, but with a mouth inside. She was not familiar with that symbol. I think that it might be the symbol for "Valley" which would probably point to this being from Kutani. This beautiful piece has 6 scenic panels and 2 more on the lid, displayed within a floral shaped pattern, with a raised base design (perhaps that qualifies as moriage) that has been hand painted with gold gilding accents. The opening of the piece is 4.5 inches in diameter. It is 5.5 inches tall without the lid. It is approximately 7" tall with the lid. It weighs 1 pound and 6.5 ounces. It is in wonderful condition with the only issue being what I consider to be a production flaw. On the bottom of the piece is a slight chip-like depression. The edge of one side of the depression is slightly raised As such I believe it to be a firing flaw, not post production chip. This flaw can be seen in Photo #12, right in the center of the photo. It does not show when the piece is displayed. The soup can is not part of this listing but is shown for visual size comparison. I do not ship internationally. If you have questions, please ask.
