This specimen is from the Chinle formation in northeastern Arizona, an area famous for its varied and brilliantly colored petrified wood. It dates back to the Triassic era and is of the extinct species of tree, araucarioxylon Arizonicum. The different colors are due to the different minerals present during the petrification process. This piece is gray with some red in it, or maybe red with some gray in it. At any rate, a good piece of fossil wood for your garden. It weighs about 2 lb. 15 3/4 oz., and measures about 5" x 3 1/4" x 2 1/2" , very roughly. It was photographed both wet and dry, and photos 1 & 2 show the wet/dry comparison.
