During these ritual ceremonies, the mask, then inert and profane, became the attribute of a costumed dancer who gave it life and speech. Because it is only through movement, and the wearer more particularly, that the mask finds its effectiveness and its meaning. The tiwara were worn during agricultural ceremonies, and generally danced in pairs. Representing highly stylized antelopes, male and female, they are decorated with ridges and herringbone patterns and the horns are finely twisted.
