Weight of about 3,100 kg without packaging. Materials: Wood, metal (eyes).Presumed age: 1970s. Traditionally, Kafigueledio represents justice among the Sénoufo. It is related to the Poro and is as sacred as the Wanyugo mask which, in turn, represents wisdom. In Sénoufo villages, when there is a theft, murder, any offense, the village chief brings together all the inhabitants in the village square. A dancer arrives, the bearer of kafigueledio. This dancer goes into a trance and the kafigueledio character must then point out the culprit with his arms in the form of a branch. The population lives in fear of Kafigueleio. Children fear him because he is considered a sorcerer. More recently, the Kafigueledio has become the property of a Senufo subclass, the Kulebele, wood sculptors. To establish their power and preserve their heritage, the leaders of this community resort to sacrificial rites, in which the Kafigueledio constitutes one of the receptacles. Hence the often dirty, crusty or grainy appearance of the clothing they wear. The Kafigueledio is also said to be used in witchcraft. Loaded with mystical powers, the arms of the fetish, oriented towards its victim, would have destructive powers, which could go as far as the death of the person concerned. The carved figurine is always covered with a garment of coarse cloth. The face is in principle hidden under a hood, the presence of feathers on the head creates a formidable atmosphere of witchcraft and terror. Until now, to scare a Senufo, nothing like presenting him a Kafigueledio! Everyone will flee and no one will ever dare to touch him ...! By its function we can bring it closer to the Bozo puppets, because it is manipulated by a dancer and serves as a vector for the designation of the culprit; During this ritual the movements of the manipulative dancer accentuate the movements of the statuette whose articulated arms gesticulate excessively. The spectators accept the mask or the puppet as being possessed by a supreme power. Superb Kafiguélédio Senoufo in wood, with metallic eyes.An observation? A question? Do not hesitate to contact us.
