Art African Couteau of Jet Mangbetu 441. Ref: ao-441Height: 35cmProduct Description :Mangbetu throwing knife from Congo DRC. Old and used part over 50 years old. Delivered on base. Of poorly known origin, the Mangbetu speak a Sudanese language, and the Biti clan to which the royal family belongs came at the end of the 18th century from upper Ituri to the south-west of Lake Albert. The Mangbetu country is located in the north-eastern region of Zaire, on either side of the Bomokandi, a tributary of the Uele; little extended; it does not exceed 140 kilometers from east to west and 100 kilometers from south to north. Once much larger, the kingdom was brought to its political and cultural peak by Nabiembali, who reigned from 1815 to 1860 and was a great organizer. In order to facilitate the assimilation of the conquered peoples, Nabiembali established a family policy of the national type: he left the chief in place but immediately married a daughter of his family. The sons born of these unions (there were more than sixty) were raised with the king (educated according to the customs and in the language of the Mangbetu) and destined to take the head of the tribe from which their mother originated. After Nabiembali's death, succession disputes and the intervention of Arab slave traders tore the country apart and impoverished until the occupation of the Congo by the Belgians in 1885. However, the prestige of the Nabiembali dynasty will survive it everywhere, and the Mangbetu influence will continue to assert itself in manners and the arts. In 1869, the German explorer Schweinfurth, describing the court of Bunza, grandson of Nabiembali, in Nangazizi, admired above all the buildings of the palace reaching exceptional dimensions: 50 meters in length, 20 meters in width, 16 meters height. The Mangbetu were particularly renowned for their art of building and their skill in forging.Part delivered with an invoice and a certificate of authenticity.African art, African masksafrican art african tribal arte africana afrikanische kunstOf poorly known origin, the Mangbetu speak a Sudanese language, and the Biti clan to which the royal family belongs came at the end of the 18th century from upper Ituri to the south-west of Lake Albert.
