NGC King Bela II of HUNGARY Bela the Blind 1131-1141 Silver Denar Coin  Bela II of Hungary was known colloquially as Bela the Blind. As the son of the brother of King Colomon, he was a threat to one day take the throne. In Hungary as in the Byzantine Empire, blind men were prohibited from wearing the crown. Thus, paranoid kings had their rivals’ eyes put out, as a more merciful alternative to outright murder. Coloman made Álmos and his seven-year-old son Béla blind to make them unsuitable for the throne of Hungary.  With his strong and reliable supporters, Béla II had his enemies, those who demanded the throne, and everyone involved in making him blind killed or murdered. Béla II introduced great reforms in Hungary, which made the country’s connections with the church stronger while at the same time remaining independent from it. The king also made it possible for more people to get the opportunity to learn how to write, and he even rebuilt the Archabbey of Pannonhalma, which burned down in 1137.  Certified and encapsulated by NGC.
