An excellent beautiful light Sun Colored Amethyst (SCA) antique GLASS DOOR KNOB. This is an early ORIGINAL GLASS knob, dating back well over 100 years old, over ONE CENTURY OLD. It has a translucent amethyst hue to it.
You don't often see these older style HEXAGON (6 - sided) SHAPED glass knobs that often. Usually when you see 'antique' glass door knobs, you see the newer glass knobs which have a completely different pattern of glass, are machine made, and have a light yellow tinted glass. These date to the post-1930's era and 1000's of them were mass produced. What is so great about a knob like this, with the amethyst color, is that everyone recognizes these as desirable antique glass knobs. As such, not only can they be used functionally as a door knob in an old home, but they are multi-functioning. We have seen them used as coat hangers and also (don't underestimate this one) they are used as stick shift knobs on vintage cars and pick-trucks, nice! Then .... there's the amethyst tint, a beautiful color, the result of the presence of manganese in the glass, a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass that acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the glass crystal clear. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this amethyst hue make this a great looking antique door knob, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique, check it out!
