Description: Sacred Temple Statue of a rare and unusual Laotian Meditating Buddha Head Fraagment, considered to be one of the earlier representations of the Buddha from the Luang Phrabang period, once portrayed seated on an elevated plinth, in the subduing Mara position. xxxx Buddha's somewhat oval face portrays a serene downcast expression with well defined features, with almond-shaped eyes slightly open, ridged eyebrows connect in the middle above a prominent nose, bow-shaped smiling lips, and elongated incised earlobes.The head is covered in tightly curled hair, bordered by a small band separates the forehead from the hairline, surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', which rises to an elaborately carved flame finial. xxxx Cast in bronze. The naturally aged surface is covered in somewhat of a multi tone patina, with traces of gilded gold pigment, black lacquer, and green malachite oxidation developing throughout. The sculpture has a dry, un-altered surface, with minor degradation of the surface, including some loss, abrasions, and casting flaws being a natural part of the statue's patina.
