The true story of "La Recta Provincia", perhaps the most sinister and shocking tale of secret societies and witch trials in the Americas, is detailed in this book on the powerful magical order that ruled Chile's remote southern archipelago of Chiloé as an indigenous black magic mafia and shadowy parallel government from its network of underground caves for a century. Inside the pages of this gripping account of sorcery and black magic in colonial Latin America, you will discover: - The Chiloé Witch Trials of 1880-1 - The revelation of the clandestine workings and spells of "La Recta Provincia" and how they wielded their dark influence through macabre initiation rituals, occult subversion tactics, and mafia-like rackets, hitherto unknown to the outside world. - Spanish Influences on indigenous occultism - Explore the fusion of Galician and Basque witchcraft in the New World with native sorcery traditions in Chiloé, along with the enduring folk magic legacy of mainland Chile. - The hallucinogenic plants of southern Chile - Discover the mystic flora that caused sorcerers to "shapeshift" and take flight into realms beyond imagination. - Their cryptic origins - How it all began in 1787 with a curious but fateful bet between a local witch and a Spanish sailor over a mysterious, leatherbound book. Buy your copy now and begin your journey through "The Upright Province" of Chiloé in southern Chile, where South American shamanism and sorcery are woven into the fabric of the forgotten local history of black magic and witchcraft. "During the Jesuit and Franciscan evangelizations of the archipelago, churches were built on Chiloé's previously 'pagan' sites. This was not so uncommon during Spanish colonial rule of the Americas; indeed, once the Spaniards had conquered Cuzco and looted the temple of Qorikancha of its gold, they razed it to the ground and built a cathedral on the remains of its stone foundations to symbolize their dominance and the triumph of Roman Catholicism over paganism. However, while Qorikancha was consecrated and dedicated to the worship of the Inca Sun god Inti, the ritual sites on which the churches of Chiloé were built almost certainly struck much more fear into the hearts of the evangelists, and the churches of Chiloé were constructed in the wood of local larch trees, which were plentiful in Chiloé and were considered protection against malignant spirits and bewitchment in the folklore of the European settlers. This was because these churches were often built near, or even above, caves or forests in which black magic and witchcraft were believed to be practised by indigenous Huilliche sorcerers in underground covens (as also reported by Charles Darwin during his stay in Chiloé from 1834 to 1835). This is certainly said to be the case with the churches built in the villages of Colo and Quicaví, which are purported until today to have a particularly heavy and negative energetic charge. Nevertheless, the belief in witchcraft and black magic, known locally as 'the art', persisted and had even become so widespread in this southern Chilean archipelago that by 1880, all manner of sicknesses and ailments were blamed on curses and spells, and residents lived in a state of constant fear, mutual suspicion and accusation. Following an increase in murders and allegations of witchcraft, the young and recently appointed provincial governor ordered the rounding up of all alleged 'sorcerers and witches'. The local jails were soon bursting with a hundred or so interned enchanters and thus began 'the Chiloé Witch Trials'. Although at least a third of the detained turned out to be simply relatively benign shamans or medicine men, it was soon discovered during the investigation that some local sorcerers had long since formed a secret magical order that had come to be called La Recta Provincia...."
