Item:202905572559BIOGRAPHYFrederick Nicholas Loveroff(1894-1959)Born Frederick Nicholas Postnikoff in Tiflis,Russia, Frederick Loveroff immigrated with his family to Saskatchewan in 1900. His actual birth date was unknown, but June 8, 1895 was eventually taken for the records. It was during the long winter months in Saskatchewan that Loveroff began experimenting with watercolours. His family eventually moved to Ontario and he became a naturalized citizen in 1911. He began studying at the Ontario College of Art in 1913, and it there that he changed his last name to the maternal family name Loveroff, supposedly because it was less common. It was also while he was at OCA that he began showing with the Royal Canadian Academy (first in 1915) and the Ontario Society of Artists (first in 1916) to great acclaim. He enjoyed a period of critical and commercial success until 1931, when the art market began to be severely affected by the Great Depression. It was then that Loveroff’s career came to a sudden halt. He moved to California and although many people attempted to persuade him, he never painted again. His career remains a brief but fascinating addition to Canadian art and his work hangs in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, University of Toronto Hart House and the University of Saskatchewan.
