CHILDREN SHELTERING FROM STORM ANTIQUE OIL PAINTING Att THOMAS PELHAM HALL c1860
ARTIST:,  Attributed Thomas Pelham Hall, British, c1810 - 1870  SUBJECT:   Children, probably siblings, sheltering in  heavy storm, siblings together, the elder brother pulling the tarpaulin over his siter, a charming scene MEDIUM:   Oil on canvas, restored and relined , SIGNATURE:  Lower right as T Hall  DATE:    Indistinctly dated, 1853, possibly 1858    SIZE:  Visible painting 88 x 67 (34.5 x 26.5 inches), frame 99 x 79cm (39 x 31 inches), depth about 5cm (2 inches)  PROVENANCE:   English country estate auction, private collection  CONDITION:  Very good; Fully restored to a very high standard and relined; on close inspection, stretcher marks and age-related crackleeur pre-restoration apparent under a glass; stretcher marks especially to the top edge; oil is stabilised throughout following restoration and the painting is clean and very presentable;  we have not looked under UV, we suspect some in painting during the restoration  FRAME:  Later than the work, a good quality, gilt frame, shows light age-related wear

We present a charming figurative study in oils,children, probably siblings sheltering in a storm, with the elder brother pulling a protective tarpaulin over his younger sister, a work we are attributing to the British painter Thomas Pelham Hall (c1810 – 1870). The painting is signed T Hall and not T Pelham Hall, so we are only attributing this work to the artist;  all the attributes, such as age, style and known examples of his work, point to the artist.     Hall was renowned for his studies of life interactions, whether in a study, in conversation, a brawl in the street, people passing an antiquities shop and looking in.  A study of family life is a subject Hall visited frequently,, whether fishing by the lakeside, a picnic or indeed, families sheltering from an overhead storm.  Date indistinctly 1853,or possibly 1858, this painting has been fully restored and relined (please see the condition report above).
