Description:
This is the standard socket bayonet black leather scabbard with brass U.S. medallion used by Union forces during the U.S. Civil War. I believe made by Springfield Armory and private contractors between 1857–1865. Certainly would have also continued to have been used following the CW into the Indian Wars period. Measures about 6" X 2 1/2" Offering as-found. Needs some leather treatment to bring the leather back to life. I will let the new owner do that. The leather is certainly revivable with the right archival treatment oil. It is intact with one tear about half way down the scabbard loop (see pics). Still one piece & would display nicely with a scabbard in the retainer loop as-is, though the tear makes it probably too fragile to wear without reinforcing it first. The belt loop is fine with no tears. This leather bayonet scabbard holder cover for Springfield Trapdoor rifle is my understanding.
I have more Civil War Militaria, fine vintage jewelry, porcelain, glassware, & antique cut glass listed!
