Delacroix et le Maroc Delacroix and Morocco

by Guy Dumur (Illustrated Hardback Edition 1988)

Interest :   Art Books, Art Subjects, Art Issues, French Romantic Art, Impressionist, Symbolist Movement, Lithographer, Individual Artists, Eugene Delacroix

About this Book :

In   1832, Eugene Delacroix accompanied the diplomatic mission of the Count of Mornay of Sultan Abd-er-Rahman. He spent nearly six months in Morocco, traveling the country from Tangier to Meknes. He also visited southern Spain and Algeria on his return to France. This trip, unique adventure that tears Delacroix to the walls of his studio, is of considerable importance. Real promoter of a romantic Orient in the 1820s, Delacroix discovers the fierce reality of an exotic world that strengthens his imagination and constitutes an inexhaustible repertoire of forms and colours to which he will refer all his life. This book gives a large place to the many drawings executed daily by Delacroix who notes each detail, each colour. It still presents a significant choice of paintings inspired by Morocco and explains the genesis through two of the most known: The Women of Algiers and Sultan Abd-er-Rahman.
