The bell works very well and has been fully cleaned and oiled for many years of continued use. The bell`s cast iron base mounts to the interior of the door thru two screw holes on 3 in. centers. The base is 4 in. in diameter. The bell dome is 3 3/4 in. in diameter and has a total 2 1/2 in. height off the door when installed. The ringing mechanism is a spring loaded ratchet type arc that activates the clapper to strike the bell several times per pull. The bell and ringer weigh a hefty 1 pound and 8 ounces as pictured. The solid brass ringer handle and mounting plate for the outside of the door is very ornate and is most likely made by another manufacturer. Most bells and ringers were selected from various manufacturers catalogues and were different. The mounting plate is 5 3/4 in. tall and 2 1/2 in. at its widest point. It mounts to the door with 2 screws. The ringer arm is designed for doors up to 1 1/2 in. thick. Not recommended for modern doors under 1 in. in thickness.
