Old Japanese Pottery Art:

Title: Antique Japanese 'Kutani' Plate w/ Rampart Dragon. Early Century 1800’s.

Description: This plate is an original Japanese "Old Kutani" ware produced over 150 years ago, in the Kaga mountain village of Kutani, now part of the city of Kaga in Ishikawa Prefecture. Kutani (ko-Kutani) or old Kutani ware is also known as 'Pottery of Ishikawa', a very popular ware produced in Japan for over 350 years. xxxxx: The particular colors, style, and design in this ware is traditional of very early Kutani pieces. The motif is hand drawn and hand painted with heavy overglazed enamels. The plate is artistically decorated with precision detailing of the three-toed rampart dragon depicted amongst the clouds, and bordered by a formal key pattern about the rim. The reverse side is formed with a slightly raised foot rim and simplistically painted with iconic floral designs in iron red. xxxxx: Plates of such size are called Mei-Mei Zara and were commonly used in appropriate tea parties. Many Kutani ware were made with no marks or used actual picture marks to identify their works, as shown in this piece. The paste is of a off-white matted colour, probably mixed clay composition of imported clay, and clay found at Kutani, with heavy overglazed enamels of red, green, yellow, and a dull purple. The glaze has natural crackling from age, with no chips, cracks, or repairs.

Observation: Typical of hand-crafted pottery, there are a few normal potter blemishes, and kiln production blemishes, including warts, dimples, and pits on the interior and exterior walls. Overall it's an exceptionally attractive piece and a well preserved specimen of Japanese Pottery Art.
