Walker Cherub Ship-Log Spinners One Brass Steger Jr., Kiel Ship-Log DESCRIPTION: The Steger Jr., Kiel Ship-Log is an instrument characterized as a type of maritime navigational recording device used as a means of ascertaining travelling distances and gauging the speed of prospective shipping vessels. Composed of brass with a ceramic dial and possessing a fixing plate, of which is capable of being turned as evidenced in the photographs. The log was typically placed on the stern of a ship, what is oftentimes referred to as the taffrail, with the device connected directly to the rotor, allowing for the numerical tabulation of its revolutions to effectively register on the indicator. DISCLAIMER: The box accompanying this item is clearly marked as that of a Walker's (Named for Thomas Ferdinand Walker, 1837-1921, who first patented the log in 1878) Cherub Mark III Series Ship-Log, however, the device contained therein is identified as a Steger Jr. Kiel recorder as detailed in the pictures pertaining to this listing.
