Remarks: * Vollmer 1; Gutenberg 18.117; Buttner 69. - Büttner grows up in Berlin-Kreuzberg and initially learns the trade of art glazier. From 1906 to 1911 he studied painting, graphics and book illustration under Emil Orlik at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin. In 1908 he became a member of the Berlin Secession and took part in group exhibitions. In 1913 the Gurlitt Gallery organized the first solo exhibition of his works. Büttner created more than 190 ex libris, initially small and very small format sheets, because he is of the opinion that the own sheets have to fit in a book. Later, his bookplates also become a little larger. He is one of the few representatives of Expressionism in the bookplate, and his best-known bookplate was commissioned by the second wife of the physicist and Nobel Prize winner Albert Einstein. He died in Freiburg in 1936. - Small residues of mounting on the back.
