The painting falls to the late Impressionist era where we can appreciate the small strokes of light pastel used to capture the light effects of the scene. The painting appears as a study for one of Edgar Degas larger paintings, or a study capturing figure in motion. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life, yet he showed little interest in painting plein-air landscapes, favoring scenes in theaters and cafés illuminated by artificial light, which he used to clarify the contours of his figures, adhering to his academic training. The painting appears to have a gallery stamp on verso, or it may be the name of the previous collector, it reads "Pavilion...Arts…… Paris ", and has a collection reference number next to it. The painting is also baring signature "Degas" in the lower margin. Indistinctly signed, after the artist. Gallery stamp, and reference number on verso. An interesting and unique find we acquired in a French estate sale. Condition: as pictured, aging, no restoration required. Dimensions: 25.8 x 20.2 cm. The painting has a reference number marked on verso, which in our opinion belong to the previous collections this artwork was part of. Sold as is. Degas experimented with an array of techniques, breaking up surface textures with hatching, contrasting dry pastel with wet, and using gouache and watercolors to soften the contours of his figures. Impressionism is art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. Impressionism can be considered the first distinctly modern movement in painting. Developing in Paris in the 1860s, its influence spread throughout Europe and eventually the United States. Its originators were artists who rejected the official, government-sanctioned exhibitions, or salons, and were consequently shunned by powerful academic art institutions. In turning away from the fine finish and detail to which most artists of their day aspired, the Impressionists aimed to capture the momentary, sensory effect of a scene - the impression objects made on the eye in a fleeting instant. To achieve this effect, many Impressionist artists moved from the studio to the streets and countryside, painting en plein air. The Impressionists loosened their brushwork and lightened their palettes to include pure, intense colors. They abandoned traditional linear perspective and avoided the clarity of form that had previously served to distinguish the more important elements of a picture from the lesser ones. For this reason, many critics faulted Impressionist paintings for their unfinished appearance.
