Правда, эта эпоха не являлась в техническом отношении принципиально новой и в основном преимущественно совершенствовала и развивала достижения предшествовавшей ей классической эпохи.Грецизированный птолемеевский Египет, восточные, греческие монархии, создающиеся тогда и в Сирии, и в Малой Азии, монархическая Македония и по-прежнему дробящаяся на множество мелких республик коренная Греция с Архипелагом и островом Критом, т.е. все Средиземноморье, образуют отныне в основном однотипный тон жизни, вызванный изменением всей старой экономики: узкие местные рамки былого полисного хозяйства стремительно разрушаются в эпоху эллинизма, и торговля вступает на путь широкого международного товарооборота. Рост денежных богатств, заставляет [с.4] и держателей мастерских, и крупных земельных собственников все интенсивнее эксплуатировать рабов и вольнонаемных рабочих, и, параллельно росту индивидуальных богатств на одном полюсе общества, столь же быстро совершается обнищание на другом, все резче и резче обозначается экономическое расслоение общества. Для исследователя экономической истории древности представляет особенный интерес как раз эллинистическая эпоха, так как именно в это время, с одной стороны, античное рабовладельческое хозяйство достигает полного своего развития, а с другой – тогда же в среде угнетенной массы рабов, батраков, вольнонаемных рабочих и обездоленного сельского населения возникают, то здесь, то там, и первые попытки борьбы, уже предвещающие грядущую гибель системы, основанной на рабском способе производства.Узнать материальную обстановку жизни этой эпохи, думается, окажется интересным не для одних лишь античников.
