Ltd. - Circa 1905 "Green Abstract Floral" -- Antique * Art Nouveau * Poly-Chrome * Majolica -- Presenting an embossed-majolica, poly-chrome, antique tile, featuring an uncommonly seen design in the Art Nouveau style, created by the, "Henry Richards Tile Co., Ltd.," of England, circa 1905. • Style: Art Nouveau • Technique: Embossed majolica • Maker: Henry Richards • Dimensions: 6" x 6" • Date: 1905 (registered) An unusual Art Nouveau abstract floral created with nature hued glazes of Forest Green and Olive, featuring a simple, swirling, organic flowering form. Interesting is how this design includes impressed details into its Olive glazed ground, which includes the impressed hash marks along its top edge and the vague markings surrounding the central form. These impressed markings are not random and may be found on all copies of this tile, precisely as they are seen here in our tile scan. The natural colorway and organic design makes this majolica tile appropriate for both Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau style applications, such as in fireplace surrounds and hearths, or as an accent tile included in decorative tile projects. Verso is clean of mortar and its grip pattern is that of this maker for its time. Verso is embossed, "England." Condition: Excellent The verso is free of mortar residue and smoke stains, which indicates this tile probably spent its long life as part of a tile backsplash for a long vanished piece of furniture, where it was framed in wood. What discoloration the verso presents is probably the result of long contact with a wood backing and continuous cleaning with water & vinegar over the last century. The grip pattern is typical of Henry Richards tiles of this period. "England" is embossed.
