Jules-Alfred Hervé-Mathé (1868-1953), French painter, was a student of Albert Maignan and also studied with Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He painted under the name, Hervé-Mathé, composed of his family surname, Hervé, and the surname of his wife, Berthe Mathé. Sent to the front in 1917 by the Ministre des Beaux-Arts on an artistic mission, he brought back a series of studies from the Champagne region which were exhibited in 1918 at the Musée de Luxembourg in Paris. Member of the Comité des Arts Appliqués d’Angers, he showed regularly from 1910 until 1939 in the exhibitions in Western of France, organized in Le Mans by the Société des Amis des Arts du Maine, in Alencon by the Société des Amis des Arts de l’Orne and in Avranches by the Société artistique de la baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. Member of the Salon des artistes français, he exhibited in their “Salons”, or annual exhibitions, from 1910 until the end of the 1930’s and during that time received an “Mention honorable” in 1922, a bronze medal in 1923 and a silver medal in 1932. His wife, Berthe-Marie Hervé-Mathé, also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français, showing her embroideries and lace in the Arts Décoratifs section. As a member of the Association syndicale professionnelle des peintres et sculpteurs français, he regularly participated in their Salon d’Hiver during the 1930’s, and in 1947 he presented his works at the Cinquantenaire du Salon d’hiver held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris. He showed in the “Pavillon de la Vallée de la Loire” at the Exposition internationale in 1937 in Paris and was awarded a silver medal. In 1937 he also showed at the Galerie Dumon in Le Mans, then at his private residence, the historic Hôtel de Vaux, also in Le Mans. The same year his portrait of Wilbur Wright was acquired by the Musée de l’Aéronautique de Paris. Several of his paintings were acquired by the French state and he was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur. During his lifetime he was listed in the Annuaire de la Curiosité et des Beaux-Arts. Today Jules-Alfred Hervé-Mathé is listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists, the renowned and very extensive publication of biographical information on visual artists in all fields.
