*** Golden Earth Tiger Tarantula -- Haplopelma schmidti Order: Araneae Suborder: Mygalomorphae Family: Theraphosidae Subfamily: Ornithoctoninae Origin: North Vietnam, China Originating in Vietnam, this natural wonder has golden legs and carapace with black femurs, white markings on sides of chelicerae, and a beautiful "tiger" pattern on abdomen. Reports of high potency of venom follows this spider, recommended caution with this beast of 8" aka Vietnam Chinese Giant Gold The Golden Earth Spider is a fairly large specimen, with a typical legspan of up to 8" (20 cm). It thrives in the tropical rain forests of southern China and Vietnam, where it builds and lives in burrows up to several feet deep, emerging to capture food. The bird spider preys on numerous small insects and other creatures, such as cockroaches, crickets, and mice. The Golden Earth Spider is a rather aggressive species, one that will not hesitate to bite humans if disturbed. Its venom is the subject of much toxicology research, and while the effects of this spider's bite on man is not well-documented, it is frequently lethal in small doses to laboratory animals such as mice and rats. As a result, it is generally regarded as a highly venomous specimen. The venom itself is a rather complex neurotoxin , containing numerous compounds capable of blocking neurotransmitters. Specimens from the genera Haplopelma, Cyriopagopus, and Ornithoctonus are frequently kept as pets. The most commonly kept species are: Haplopelma albostriatum, H. hainanum, H. lividum, H. longipes, H. minax, H. schmidti, Ornithoctonus aureotibialis and Cyriopagopus schioedtei. More species are kept and new species enters the hobby every now and then, but most of this material need to be proberly identified or described. Haplopelma and Ornithoctonus are burrow-dwellers. A high soil level (at least 15 cm, or 6") is necessary for them to be able to successfully dig burrows. This behavior is described by von Wirth and Huber in the "Haplopelma-tanks" (2002, 2004), which also recommends frequently watering the cage. Alternatively, one can create a "fauna box" by filling up a cage (as high as possible, up to a few centimeters below the top) with potting soil, one can place (as high as possible) a "fauna box", which one fills up with potting soil, coconut compost, or a peat moss mixture. However this method is less advantageous than the method recommended in the Haplopelma Spezialbecken. Temperatures of 23°-25°C are sufficient. Payment: By Paypal Shipping costFree shipping cost.
