1915 propaganda poster used by the British Government to entice Irishmen to fight for the British Army during World War One.
Many Irish believed if they aided the British to win the war Britain would grant Ireland Independence once the war was over. This of course never happened. By early 1916, at least 210,000 had been recruited. About 28,000 Irishmen died.
The poster is a good example of the way Britain enticed the Irish into the war. The Lusitania was a Scottish ocean liner which was torpedoed by a German U-boat on the 7th of May 1915. It sank in 18 minutes and took place eight miles off the Old Head of Kinsale, Cork , Ireland . It killed 1,198 of the 1,959 people aboard. The sinking caused worldwide horror and a coup for anti-German sentiment. It was instrumental in bringing the US into WW1.
This poster contains colourful detail and highlights the terror that the passengers must have endured.
