Seller: authentic_curios_japan (45) 100%, Location: Sagamihara-Shi, Kanagawa-Ken, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 153737692158 Description: This natsume was made in Okinawa (a main island in Ryukyus). It is quite unique in terms of the illustrated design (hibiscus flower) as well as the technique used (TSUIKIN). Re the design, it is hibiscus flower, which naturally glows in tropical and subtropical areas. Ryukyus is located in subtropical area. Re the technique, neither MAKIE technique nor the powder of gold is used.Instead, Tsuikin technique is used, which was invented in Okinawa more than 300 years ago. The red, yellow and green parts are called Tsuikin. It is made of pigments (green, red and yellow) and URUSHI (japan), formed into film (thin layer), then cut into shapes (e.g. flower, leaves), and stuck on the natsume.. This was made by Hiroshi Ikoma (生駒 弘) who signed on the back of the lid (photograph #12).He founded RENBO (the name of the lacquerware company) in Okinawa 1931, which was closed down in 2001. It is in excellent condition. No chips, cracks or marks. White (shining) parts on photographs are reflection of lightening i.e. not an issue, that happens because the surface of Japanese lacquerware is extremely smooth like a miller. One red dot (@4:00) and a green dot (@8:00) are not an issue (Photograph #10). They are TSUKIN attached there during production.
