Title: Khmer Bronze Standing Multi-arm Bodhisattva 'Avalokite'svara', Angkorian Period, 11/12th C. Surin Province, Present Day Thailand.

Description: Extremely rare bronze Khmer Bodhisattva multi-armed figure of Avalokitesvara, an iconic manifestation of the Bodhisattva figure, as a male deity, depicted standing in a strong frontal posture on a rectangular plinth, holding attributes. In Buddhism it is believed that all bodhisattvas are asexual, they appear in various forms in different circumstances. In Khmer, the name is 'Preah Mae Kun Ci Lem', describes Avalokite'svara as the bodhisattva who can take the form of any type of male or female, human or non-human.

Image Details: The figure is superbly executed in traditional Angkorian fashion, stands in 'Samabhanga' on a small plinth, with his hands displaying the 'Vitarka' mudra, while hold attributes. The two hands before him hold a lotus bud, and a vase, while his raised hands hold a string of rosary beads and holy sutra. His head is embellished with the Buddha 'Amitabha' seated in meditation, with the hands folded in 'Dhyanamudra', centered on his headdress. Unclothed above the waist the figure is beautifully modeled with a jeweled necklace, draped in pendulous pendants. He wears a short vertical striated sampot hung low about the midriff, secured by a highly decorative belt passing around his hips, ornamented with a central rosette and hanging pendants, complimented by an ornate central panel elegantly draped in stylish fish-tail folds, both front and back. XXX His softly contoured face with indigenous characteristic has a serene downcast expression, with heavy-lidded eyes, arched eyebrows carved in relief meet in the middle above a well-shaped broad nose, and wide lips with an insipid smile are framed by a second incised line. The head is covered in tightly braided hair curls, enhanced by a cylindrical-shaped topknot, ornamented by a miniature Buddha figures seated in a sanctuary at the front, and topped by a lotus flower finial. xxxx Lost wax cast, with a superb naturally aged dark chocolate brown patina, revealing a mixture of surface encrustations, malachite, cuprite, azurite, calcite, and manganese, from ground water leeching in the soil, along with embedded soil deposits from the enviornment in which it was maintained. The piece is in excellent condition, unaltered in any way, originally discovered in the Surin Province of north eastern present day Thailand, once the central region of the Khmer Empire.
