Description: An exquisite 17th to 18th century Khmer sandstone bas relief fragment, skillfully executed in traditional Angkorian style, chiseled from a solid block of green-gray wacke, a harder sandstone originating from the base of the Phnom Kulen mountains in the northern region of Cambodia. xxxx Narrative theme - from Khmer Mythology the fragmented stone depicts a continuous ceremonial procession of a festive march, with Lord Vishnu as the central figure, portrayed in a precarious dance position, with open legs, beating the temple drum, or "Kong" (tam tam), which is supported by a sturdy timber, carried on the shoulders by his male attendants, and accompanied by his court subjects, musicians, and guardian soldiers; all dressed in typical Angkor style attire, with their chest exposed, walking bare footed, wearing only a piece of loin cloth wrapping aroud their waist, secured by a simple belt, and draped down the front by a krama cloth.
