Temple Ruin Lintel Fragment. Angkor Thom Province, Cambodia. Museum Quality! Image Details:x A superb Khmer Sandstone Temple Relief Element, beautifully modeled in traditional 'Bayon' style, depicting an Apsara, the female spirit of the clouds and water. As an important motif in Hinduism, she is depicted as a supernatural female living in the celestial court of Indra, sent to earth by the gods as a sensuous celestial nymph to dance and seduce the hearts of demon ascetics. Apsara is presented both youthful and elegant, shrouded by a floral sanctuary, standing poise with both hands in mudra, shown unclothed above the waist with deep bosoms adorned in mere jeweled ornamentation, possessing a slim waist and fairly large hips, dressed in traditional celestial clothes with her legs open, she wears a stylized sampot folded over a plain belt secured around her hips. Her garment is fitted with a pendulous central panel draped motionlessly to the floor. Her face is characterized by a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes, arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, well-shaped mouth with insipid smile, and elongated earlobes adorned with triangular earring pendants. Her woven braided hair rises to an ornate floral headdress decorated in a large rosette at the top. The fragmented sandstone was once part of a complex lintel or wall section, originally hand-carved in bas relief, from a solid block of dense sandstone (wacke), modeled with detailing still clearly visible, showing even wear on the entire surface, with weathering consistent with age. The patina is superb, penetrating the surface of the stone in variations of hues and colours, from extended exposure to the natural elements in which it was maintained.
