Khmer Sandstone Carved Temple Pillar Statue of the Visionary Hermit 'Phra Lersi'. 18th C. Cambodia.

Description: A remarkable, well preserved 18th century Khmer sandstone carved Temple Pillar Statue from Siem Reap province of Cambodia. A massive specimen, beautifully sculpted in the round, from a solid block of dense sandstone, depicting a forest dwelling visionary elder known in Cambodia as "Rosei", a hermit sage with supernatural powers with the abilities to make philosphical worldly predictions. XXX Rosei is portrayed kneeling on a rectangular plinth, in a turned posture suppported by the left hand, while the right hand is held to the heart in mudra. Rosei's head is glancing over the left shoulder in an exhalted gesture. He is shown unclothed above the waist, wearing a mere short vertical straited sampot, secured by a decorative belt, and as always depicted bare footed. XXX Dedicated to the higher spiritual practice, Lersi's face reflects a serene, contemplative expression, characterized by a long tangled beard, mustache, and hair pulled back from his face, gathered in a topknot, supported by a band of beads. Ridged eyebrows, prominent nose, wide well-shaped mouth, and elongated earlobes are typical khmer style attributes, and compliment the artist's rendition.

Hermit Sage - in general Lersi (rosei) are known as 'Ascetics' and are characterised by refraining from worldly pleasures. Those who practice this lifestyle hope to achieve greater spirituality, and believe the action of purifying the body helps to purify the soul and thus obtain a greater connection with the divine.

XXX Originally chiseled as part of a Stone Pillar Temple element, this fragmented portion is an excellent example, unaltered, presented in its unrepaired condition as found, reveals a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged patina of molted variation of hues and colour throughout. The surface showing minor degradation, and clear evidence of selective erosion, that developes after extensive exposure to the elements over time.

Data Observation: Temple Element, Excellent Condition, Solid, with the exception of minor surface abrasions, with a small chip at the right ear. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
