Title: Khmer Bronze Tantric Multi-arm Hindu Deity 'Hevajra', Angkor Wat 'Bayon' Style. 19/20th C. Cambodia.

Overview: A superb Khmer Multi-armed Male Deity Figure of 'Hevajra', stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Bayon' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is elegantly modeled with characteristics linked to Khmer statuary of the period, and demonstrates the regional style of an era who's art and culture was once under the rule of the Khmer Empire for several centuries, and is distinguished here by the exquisite craftsmanship, fluidity, and charming naturalism in which the figure possesses. The statue measures 22.75 inches (57.79cm) in height.

Description:  Hevajra is a male Tantra Deity that holds personified symbols for the Buddhist concept of a supreme being in the state of non-duality, which points to the idea that the universe and all its multiplicity are ultimately expressions or appearances of one essential reality, the fundamental quality of everything as one part or made of one.   The Image:  A dynamic multi-armed Khmer representation of 'Hevajra', a Buddhist enlightened being, associated with the practice of Tantra, a method of accelerating the path to 'Nirvana', or the release from individual consciousness and the cycle of life and death. XXX Portrayed in this rare bronze statuette, the image radiates a powerful blend of calm and restrained inner energy, depicted with his eight heads and sixteen arms, standing perfectly balanced on one foot in an exaggerated posture suppressing the 'apasmara', the demon of ignorance or forgetfulness with the foot of the same leg. The deity is shown with eight arms out-stretched in an arc on each side, while each of his hands display the 'Vitarka' mudra, a teaching gesture, with palms of each hand facing outward. XXX The deity is richly jeweled, wears a mere sampot 'Can Kpin' secured by an ornate belt decorated in trapped rosettes, and a pendulous central panel fashioned at the back. Each face has broad features and full lips that are typical of Khmer statuary, expressed by almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and wide smiling mouth. Elongated earlobes adorned by long triangular earrings frame each face. The heads are intricately joined by inter-connected 'diadem' crowns, rising to a cylindrical Chignon style headdress, topped by a lotus flower finial. XXX The figure is classified as 'Bayon' style art of the Khmer Angkorian Era, presented in its original unaltered and unrepaired condition, with detailing clearly visible. The relatively smooth surface has a naturally aged chocolate brown patina, with molted variations.
