Image Details:x An exquisite 12th to 13th century Khmer Sandstone Temple Relief Element, beautifully modeled in traditional 'Angkorian' style, depicting the Deity figure 'Vishnu' in human form, Kneeling on a sheltered platform within an arched Sanctuary, flanked by Naga Serpents, to both sides. The deity is shown kneeling in a relaxed attitude, Who once held a club in the right hand. He is unclothed above the waist adorned in mere jeweled ornamentation, wearing a short stylized Sampot, folded over a plain belt secured around his hips. He wears an elaborate inter-connected Angkorian style crown, surmounted by a conical-shaped headdress, ornamented in vertical rows of tightly braided hair, bound by a band with floral ornamentation. His indigenous face appears serene, with arched eyebrows set over almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, thick lips, and elongated earlobes framing his face.
The fragmented sandstone was once part of a complex lintel or wall section, originally hand-carved in bas relief, from a solid block of dense sandstone, modeled with detailing still clearly visible, showing even wear on the entire surface, with weathering consistent with age. The patina is superb, penetrating the surface of the stone in variations of hues and colours, from extended exposure to the natural elements in which it was maintained.
