A very attractive and very beautifully hand painted antique Japanese porcelain bowl, decorated in a traditional Imari or Arita pattern and dating from the mid 19th century, during the late Edo period circa 1860. Some collectors may refer to this style of decoration as gold brocade or Akae Kinrande ( 赤絵金襴手 )

The bowl has a slightly ribbed moulded body with a scalloped rim. It has been beautifully hand painted all over with a colourful and intricate Imari design of repeating panels in underglaze blue, and enamel in iron red, peach with gilding. The centre of the bowl features a central design of four large stylised tomoe (stylised comma shapes) forming a manji ji ( 卍字) a right facing Buddhistic swastika in a stylised flower shape.

There are two white porcelain ground cartouches decorated with a fenced garden scene with bamboo, peonies and leaves. There are a number of other panels mainly in swirling shapes following the lines of the central tomoe swastika design and two further white ground panels with Oriental Phoenix ( 鳳凰 ) Hō-ō birds or Feng Huang. The remaining smaller cartouches or panels are painted with chrysanthemums and other flowers.

The outside of the bowl is painted in a similar manner to the inside with large phoenix panels , flowers and birds. The base has a stylised wave pattern in under glaze blue. The foot rim is high and unglazed and there is an under glaze blue ring painted on the base.

The bowl stands 3 3/4 inches ( 9.5 cm) high and the rim diameter is 9 1/2 inches ( 24 cm). The base diameter is 4 1/2 inches  ( 11.5 cm). t is in excellent antique condition with some wear to the gilding commensurate with age and use. There is a little distortion the bowl from firing, it can rock slightly on the foot. It weighs 935 grammes unpacked.
