Biden's Hometown. 7 SCARCITIES from SCRANTON Joe Biden's Hometown Scranton is knows as "Electric City" due to its unique role in the history of electrification. It was one of the first urban areas in the world to power its lights, railways and industrial operations with electricity starting way back in 1880.  Its streetcar system was the first in the world to be powered solely by electricity!  See history below. Here you have 7 different vintage stock ceritificates from the very company behind that revolution -- The Scanton Electric Co.  6 of them (in 5 colors shown plus olive green) portray a beautiful topless female lighting a bulb. These are dated from the 1950's -1960's.  Each color represents a different share amount or share type. We sold these art deco stunners on our Wall Street History Stand for $20 to $30 and buyers loved them. Our eBay price?  $2.85!!! The 7th certificate is the oldest, rarest and most oranate with a "triple vignette". It was issued between 1907 and the 1920's (dates vary). It is completely filled in by hand. The steel-engraved vignette features an electric dynamo, an angel holding a shining bulb and a gas storage tank. An etching of this quality should command $30 to $40, and it did just that when we sold it on our Wall Street History stand.  Our eBay price?   $2.85!!! He or she who does not buy this collection already bought it from us or simply has no interest in fine old stock certificates, intalglio engraving or the history of electricity in the U.S.A. LIMITED REMAINING SUPPLY! Limited Time Offer! The red fountain pen lines on the large old rare orange stock may be slighty blurred from having been stored in a warehouse for a century or so! The fee for searching out one with crystal clear sharp red lines with no blurring or bleeding is $10.  Please email to upgrade the old orange stock. The Electric City Sign lights up Scranton's skyline at night! It was originally built to commemorate Scranton’s status as being one of the first cities in the United States to become electrified. The city's nickname "Electric City" began when electric lights were introduced in 1880 at the Dickson Manufacturing Company. In 1886, the United States' first successful streetcars powered only by electricity began operating in Scranton. The original sign had 1,200 40-watt filament incandescent bulbs that featured circles of red and green, a flame of red and amber, and letters, rays, and sconces of white. The sign was later turned off in the mid-20th century and sat dormant for several decades. It was relit in 2004 when the original 40-watt filament incandescent bulbs were replaced with all-white 11-watt bulbs, but many of the new bulbs burned out prematurely within a decade. The sign was again renovated in 2014 with new one-watt LED bulbs that followed the original 1930s color scheme. La Fiesta Italiana, an Italian-American cultural organization, organized the fundraising effort for the latest renovation. The sign remains lit with these bulbs today.
