Seller: Top-Rated Seller godblessyou21 (866) 100%, Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 202594803436 Beautifully preserved, larger Cross pendant from an early Christian period featuring ancient "budded" ornate design with hand-carved ornament made of small circular shapes, and solid necklace bale. Similar objects are often called "Viking" crosses and are dated c.10-13th century (according to the available literature; please see the last picture for the listing). Good antique condition, slightly bent, has few superficial dents and scratches, and worn off due to age and devotional wearing, has beautiful original dark green patina from the past centuries. There is a visible dent on one crossbar next to the centerpiece. The size of the pendant is shown on the photographs for this listing. Authentic ancient symbol of Christian faith. The side and the bottom crossbar ends have three circles, or buds each, whereas the top incorporates the necklace loop as a part of the three-budded design. In a Christian context, such a design could symbolically represent the Holy Trinity, similarly to the three-leaved clover, or Shamrock. However, in earlier Celtic Druidry, the three circles or rings would represent the three dominions of Earth, Sea, and Sky. In addition to "budded" ends of the crossbars, both sides of the cross pendant bear images of small circles appearing to be hand-carved or struck by a coppersmith's hand tool. The multiple images of circular shape could also symbolize budding, like multiple flower buds would represent people's journey of growth in the Christian faith: flowers growing, but not yet in full bloom. The style of the pendant is also similar to the early "budded" cross pendants of Celtic or Northern European (Scandinavian) origin. Similar crosses are often described as 10-11th century "Viking" crosses. Such crosses traveled across Europe during the Viking Age, a period of Nordic military, mercantile and demographic expansion reaching the Byzantine Empire, France, Italy, Baltic nations and Ancient Russia (Rus). Please examine all photographs carefully and do your own research if necessary.
