Obverse: A sword between keys in a pelleted ring and legend 'PETRI/ET.PA[...]' (Peter and Paul). Reverse: A raised triangle (facing bust?) in a pelleted ring with legend '+ ET S' SWIThVN[.]' (and seal ofSwithun). 29/30mm, 9.88 gr. Fine/Very Fine condition. Provenance: Found in Hampshire, England. Notes: Saint Swithun was a 9th century bishop of Winchester, Hampshire. He was adopted aspatron of the church at Winchester after its restoration in the 10th century, previously dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. His body was moved from its outdoor grave toÆthelwold's basilica on 15 July 971 and, according to contemporary accounts, various miracles preceded and followed the move. His feast day (15th July) is associated with the weather-lore proverb that if it rains on St. Swithun's day, it will rain for 40 days after. A 100% genuine piece, acquired in a European Auction.
