Antique Mettlach Etched Beer Stein #2833E Military Theme Grenadiers c.1903

Description: This beautiful stein was produced by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach over 100 years ago.

The exceptionally crafted etched technique decoration shows a picture of a German military unit advancing toward the enemy. They wear Prussian Grenadiers uniform of the time of Napoleonic wars. This specific helmet nicknamed "mitre" for the resemblance to bishop's headdress was a part of grenadiers uniform. The soldier in front turns his head to look at his comrade who apparently was hit by an enemy bullet.

The inscription on the bottom reads: "Ich hatt eine Kameraden" (I had a comrade). These are the lyrics from the poem “Der Gute Kamerad”, written by Ludwig Uhland in 1809 and set to music in 1826 by Friedrich Silcher

The design of the stein was made by the artist who signed "MC". I was not able to find out who exactly this artist as he seems to create artwork for several steins including 2886, 2887 and 2889 - and also 2833A, 2833B, C and D - these are from the same series that illustrates most popular songs of the time.

The ysoldiers on the picture are portrayed with many details - you can notice the clothing details, facial impressions etc. In fact, there are very few Mettlach pieces that show contemporary subject without caricature.

The lid is pewter of a steeple style - please note - this is the original lid, not a replacement. People who bought a Mettlach stein at the time were given a choice of different lids, including special order ones. This one shows the mark of Martin Pauson, a well-known pewterer and decorator in Munich at the turn of the century. The pewter lids were actually more expensive at the time than lids inlaid with ceramic inlays. It is engraved with the presentation inscription: "Lt.Bosmiller s. Diener Weihnachten 1905" - it was a gift to Lieutenant Bosmiller for the Christmas of 1905.

The stein is fully marked at the bottom with incised Mettlach tower mark, mold number 2833E and 03 for the year of production of 1903. There is also a "GEZ.GESCH." patent protection mark.

The stein is perfect flawless condition. It is 9.5" tall to the top of the finial.
