Seller: artancientltd (9,489) 99.4%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 201216712256 Material: Silver gilt, Original or Reproduction: Original, Type: Brooch, Genuine or Reproduction: Genuine, Age: Medieval, Origin: European, Details: A stunning Migration period chip-carved silver gilt brooch, dating to the 6th century AD. This wonderful s-shaped jewel exemplifies the best of Migration period art; two sinuous ravens reach out as if grappling with one another - locked in an eternal struggle. The body adorned with triangular panels, the eyes decorated with waffle foil backed garnet. The waffle pattern, stamped on extremely thin golden foil, seems almost impossibly intricate for a hand-made object. A particularly refined example of the type. The theme of the raven was omnipresent in the art of the Germanic peoples of the Migration period, who originally shared a similar pantheon of gods and mythology.Very similar examples from both Anglo Saxon and continental settlements are known, for an Anglo-Saxon example please see: L. F. Salzman (ed.), 1939. Anglo-Saxon Remains: A History of the County of Oxford: Volume 1. pp. 346, fig. 3. For a Frankish example currently with the Metropolitan Museum please follow this link.Length: 7/8 of an inch. Condition: Excellent, original iron pin now missing, otherwise intact and unrestored. The eyes, often reset, are original here. Provenance: Ex. British private collection, acquired 1990’s. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
