Item:133113031628NGC graded, serialized and encapsulated gold tremissis coin of popular Eastern Roman / Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (The Great) who reigned from 527 - 565 AD. A Byzantine Emperor, Justinian is noted for a number of interesting facts. He was the lastEmperor to speak Latin as his first language, he had a large building program which saw theconstruction of the Hagia Sophia, the massive church still standing today in Istanbul, whichwas for centuries the centre of Orthodox Christianity. He also attempted, and briefly succeeded,in trying to reclaim the lands of the now defunct Western Roman Empire, trying to revive one lasttime the greatness of Rome. While he managed at great cost to reclaim Northern Africa from theVandals, and defeat the Ostrogoth Empire to retake Dalmatia, Italy, Rome, and even parts of southern Spain, within a few years of his death all these lands would once again be overwhelmedand fall to their previous inhabitants. He is still considered a Saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. This particular coin, is a Tremissis, a solid gold issue smaller than a Solidus. It was graded by the NGC as “MINT STATE” with a 2/5 for both Strike and Surface. Minted in Constantinople, the Reverse depicts winged Victory advancing with cross on globe. Nice details. While being more valuable due to its metal, gold coins are also more valuable on ahistorical note, being that gold is a much softer metal and therefore not as many of thattype will survive the passing millennia as will bronze coins. Upgraded to the "Scratch Resistant" Capsule. NOTE* This coin has NOT been removed from its permanent capsule. Some of these photographs weretaken prior to encapsulation. I combine SHIPPING.
