Publisher: Sniffen Court/Atheneum Books (1977). Exhibition Brochure tipped in, "The Coffins, Mask & Mummy of Tutankhamun". When the tomb of “King Tut” – the Pharaoh Tutankhamun – was discovered in 1922 the entire world was thrilled, for behind the sealed door was the richest treasure from an ancient civilization that has ever been brought to light. Rich jewels, exquisite furniture and other artifacts, beautiful statues, and a coffin of solid gold – chamber after chamber crammed with riches – rewarded long years of search on the part of archaeologist Howard Carter and his patron, Lord Carnarvon. Just as important as the treasures were the hundreds of objects that revealed how the young king and his subjects lived. Tutankhamun was a child king. He took the throne in 1334 B.C. at the age of nine, and ruled only about ten years before he died. The Swinburne’s simple but authoritative text tells of the discovery of the tomb in a lively narrative. The work of the archaeologists, the magnificent treasures they found, and the life of Tutankhamun are described in fascinating detail. Over 100 stunning photographs, 42 in full color, illustrate this highly readable book. CONDITION: ACCEPTABLE/POOR: Unread but damp damaged, very large (11x9") oversized hardcover with printed board and (facsimile) dustjacket. Atheneum (1997) 96 pages. Includes glossy brochure "The Coffins, Mask, & Mummy of Tutankhamun". Book appears unread, though of course with a book 20 years old there's always the likelihood it has been flipped through once or twice. But there's no evidence of the book ever having been read. However at some point in time the book was exposed to a spill (looks like it was merely water, perhaps very light tea or soda). ALL of the pages in the book are water rippled at stained at the upper outside corner. About 15% of each page is so affected. There's also a piece of transparent ("scotch") tape adhering to the front free page (the first blank, unprinted, colored heavy stock page beneath the front cover). Except for the water damage and the small piece of tape, the pages are clean, crisp, unmarked, (otherwise) unmutilated/undamaged, tightly bound, and seemingly unread. The book is published with printed boards, but it seems as if some printings of the book were distributed with a dustjacket, and some printings not (as is oftentimes the case when books are published with printed covers). In any event, this particular copy came to us without a dustjacket. We believe that every hardcover book should have a dustjacket so as to protect the covers. So we "manufactured" a surrogate dustjacket by imaging the dustjacket from another copy of the book we have in stock, and then printing those images, producing a full-color, durable dustjacket printed on high-gloss photographic quality paper, enclosed in a mylar sleeve. Beneath the dustjacket the covers evidence moderate edge and corner shelfwear, i.e., generally rubbing and abrasion and slight corner bumping (as is common to large books like this which are awkward to handle). principally to the (shelf-side) bottom edges/corners of the covers. Given the water-damaged pages inside the book it certainly lacks the "sex appeal" of a "shelf trophy". Nonetheless for those not concerned with whether the book will or will not enhance their social status or intellectual reputation, it is an otherwise unread copy with "lots of miles left under the hood". Satisfaction unconditionally guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. No disappointments, no excuses. PROMPT SHIPPING! HEAVILY PADDED, DAMAGE-FREE PACKAGING! Meticulous and accurate descriptions! PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Behind The Sealed Door - The discovery of the tomb and treasures of Tutankhamun, by Irene and Laurence Swinburne, published in cooperation with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1977. 96 page hard back book over 100 stunning photographs with 42 in full color. PROFESSIONAL REVIEW: REVIEW: Describes the discovery of King Tutankhamen's tomb and the treasures found inside. Relates the story of the discovery of the tomb in a lively narrative as exciting as a mystery story. READER REVIEW: REVIEW: Experience the majesty of Tut's tomb in both word and photos. The wonders of King Tut have thrilled one generation after another since the remarkable find in 1922, and that thrill rarely dies as one grows older. Behind the Sealed Door: The Discovery of the Tomb and Treasures of Tutankhamun is a magnificent book. Irene and Laurence Swinburne wrote a short narrative of the amazing discovery as it progressed under the watchful eye of archaeologist Howard Carter, but one is most impressed by the numerous photographs lavishly decorating virtually every page of the book. There are more than 100 photographs in all of the tomb and its priceless treasures, many of them taken by photographer Harry Burton. Of these, 42 are full-color photographs of indescribably beautiful artifacts that lay buried in the sands of the Egyptian desert for over 3300 years. There are wide shots showing the appearance of parts of the tomb as Howard Carter first saw them as well as close-up photographs of particularly gorgeous artifacts. The Swinburnes do a wonderful job of summarizing the process of the archaeological mission and the pain-staking work of removing the artifacts with extreme care, pointing out that it took a good five years of seasonal work to accomplish everything. The narrative effectively captures the rapture and wonder experienced by Carter and those around him as they made one incredible discovery after another in the tomb complex. Behind the Sealed Door is as close as any reader can come to experiencing the historical importance and awe-inspiring majesty of Howard Carter's remarkable find. The photographs speak for themselves, and the short narrative contributes greatly to the overall presentation, presenting a number of facts that are not widely known about the discovery process. This is a wonderful book for those already fascinated with the Egyptian civilization, and it makes for a fantastic introduction to the wonders of King Tut's tomb for those yet to explore the tantalizing secrets of Ancient Egypt. I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). The shipment will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher. Most international orders cost an additional $12.99 to $33.99 for an insured shipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the economies of combined shipping/insurance costs. Your purchase will ordinarily be shipped within 48 hours of payment. We package as well as anyone in the business, with lots of protective padding and containers. All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal requirements. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA. That’s why all of our shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with. If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever, I offer a no questions asked return policy. Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs). Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world – but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
