Nabeshima 鍋島 Footed Dish 2 Enamel Black Birds w Cobalt +Green Florals Japanese.
. Large pictures upper left of listing . A fine late Edo to Meiji period Nabeshima 鍋島 footed dish with the characteristic blue verticals on the high footrim. The thick color enamel was applied over the underglaze blue (see angled pic of black birds and leaves). Nabeshima designs are typically stylized florals, teaware and textile motifs. Birds are known but quite rare. This is a phoenix example from the Imari City museum, . Beautiful colors with strong 3-d. On my full size monitor, the above 3 pics are about actual size. The blue is closest to the 3rd (detail) pic. The 3-d effect is much stronger viewing the actual dish. This type of enameling is reminiscent of the Chinese overglaze doucai 斗彩 technique. Condition: Very good no chips cracks hairlines. One grain of sand. Dimensions: 3.8 cm high, 15 cm or 6" diameter. No mark, distinctive footrim.
