Beautiful old sad iron. This was created possibly as early as 1890 in West Bromich, United Kingdom. This has an antique/vintage patina that really speaks to its age and use. Apparently “sad” is an old English term for “solid”. These were used in China, through the Middle Ages in Europe, and were popular in the late 1800’s through the 1950’s. I’ve cleaned and scrubbed it thoroughly but you could still sand off more of the patina if you want. I think it’s nice with some wear showing. This could be a doorstop or a display item. You probably could still even use it as an iron. Please grab it with an oven mitt if you do!!!
There is wear, staining, rusting, and marking throughout. Please see pictures for condition detail.
