OLD TRIBAL MAMULI – on Cord Vintage Mamuli Earring-Pendant from Sumba Island in Indonesia – Collectible …beautiful Collection piece OLD TRIBAL MAMULI - Vintage Mamuli Earring-Pendant from Sumba Island in Indonesia, a beautiful Collection piece This unusual large vintage Mamuli pendant is a unique form of omega-shaped tribal jewelry from Sumba Island in Eastern Indonesia. Sumba Island has 7 tribes, each with its own distinct Mamuli design. Mamuli are part of a Sumba family's heirlooms, believed to gain increasing ancestral powers as they pass from generation to generation. Historically they were worn on ceremonial occasions only, because they were thought to have too much spirit potency for daily wear. Although a Mamuli's shape represents a stylized female, they were worn by tribal men as earrings. Because of their large size and flared ends, men sometimes attached cords to fasten to their turbans for extra support (although they are not particularly heavy because they are hollow). Today both men and women wear them, often as pendants strung on simple cords or ribbons.
