These pages have beautiful wonderful illustrations of shells that were done over 187 years ago. These pages were hand colored by artist individually. The page in this auction is not a copy or reproduction. It is an original page taken out of one of the original volumes of “Neues Systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet”. This volume was from an 1831 printing. The first three volumes of the eleven-volume series were published by Friedrich Heinrich Martini. After his death in 1778 Johannes Jerome Chemnitz took over the continuation of the series.Friedrich Wilhelm Martini who practiced medicine in Hamburg began, in1769, the richly colour illustrated shell book: Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet published by Gabriel Nikolaus Raspe at Nürnberg. But he died after the publication of the third volume. His work was continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz (1730–1800) who added eight volumes between 1779 and 1795.Even though the work does not use the binomial system both are considered the authors of the new species. He was a Member of Berlinische Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde Johann Chemnitz continued the work of Friedrich WilhelmMartini (1729–1778), Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet. He added to the three volumes previously published, eight new volumes in 1779 and 1795. Although neither of the two authors use the binomial system, they are regarded as the authors of many species which were first described in this work. Chemnitz used many specimens from cabinet of curiosities of the king of Denmark whose conservator was Lorenz Spengler (1720–1807).
