In this lot we are pleased to offer a superb pair of 16th century crown and stain glass windows. This museum quality pair of 16th century windows consists of two tondo panels, one depicting the Holy Trinity, and the other, the Last Supper inset within circular crown glass medallions and positioned over two panels bearing portraits of noblemen and coats of arms which are also inset with circular crown glass medallions. The circular and thick round pieces called crown glass are identifiable by the distinctive lump of glass left by the pontil rod. They were used both domestically and ecclesiastically in windows of the 16th century. The two portraits of noblemen relate to the Duchy of "Braunschweig-Lünenburg" (Brunswich-Lüneburg) of lower Saxony Germany. These portraits are inscribed with various text in both Latin and German, one bearing the date 1546. The coats of arms below the left portrait are clearly that of the House of Welf, (also Guelf or Guelph). While purely speculative, this could possibly be a portrait of Ernest the Confessor, (1497–1546), who reigned over the Duchy and helped to firmly establish the Lutheran faith in the Germanic held territories of the Holy Roman Empire. The portrait on the right, once again with speculation, could possibly be that of John Frederick I, (1503-1554), Elector of Saxony and head of the Schmalkadic League and/or Schmalkadic War of 1546. Further research by the proud new owner of these superb windows should easily produce more fruit and appreciation of them. Framed as a pair within a newer pine outer frame, the windows measure 36 by 33 inches. Condition: Good and strong colors, including yellow. Portions are probably re-leaded with some cracks apparent (refer our listing photographs). There is some rubbing to painted surfaces with possibly minor retouching.
